Arrival & Stay

Bochum is a medium sized city in the state North Rhine-Westphalia. It is located near to two airports, Dortmund and Düsseldorf, with regular flights all over Europe and beond. You can easily get to Bochum by car or train.

Please let us know as soon as possible when exactly you will arrive in Bochum, so that we can arrange your accommodation and organize someone of our IAESTE staff to pick you up. This person will take you to your accommodation and answer your questions.

Please remember to bring a valid passport and a valid visa (for non-EU-citizens)!!!

Arrival

Arrival by airplane

There are several airports near Bochum that we recommend as a destination airport.

We are pleased to help you with the planning of your onward journey from the airport to Bochum. You can look for appropriate connections on the pages of the Deutsche Bahn.

Arrival by train

Because of Bochum's connection to the international high-speed rail network, it is in some cases possible to travel to Bochum by train. You can look for suitable connections at the pages of the European Railways or the Deutsche Bahn.

Arrival by car

Bochum is connected to the German highway network. Europe-wide route suggestions are available here. We do not recommend travelling by car as there are relatively few parking lots in Bochum. Besides a car is not necessary in everyday life because everything can be reached by foot or bus/tram.

Accommodation

If you inform us in time about your arrival, we will arrange accommodation for you. We search for low-cost, furnished rooms and rent them for the period of your internship. The rooms are equipped at least with a bed, a cupboard/shelf, a table and a chair. While you will have a room for yourselve you share the  kitchen and showers/WC with your flatmates. In most rooms there will be an Internet connection, but we cannot always guarantee for that.

Your rent will be around 250 € per month. The rent will be taken directly from your internship salary, so that you do not need to worry about the lodging issues. In addition, we will collect a deposit of 125 € from you at your arrival. You will get it back at the end of your stay, if you leave your room without having damaged anything.

Towels must be brought along! The rent of bed linen will be taken off your deposit, and usually costs 4 €/month.

The first days in Bochum

During the first days a mentor will help you with all your questions and show you the city center of Bochum. You will find out where you can buy all the everyday stuff and what you can do inBochum in the evenings. Additionally we assist you in getting a German SIM card (prepaid) for your mobile phone so that you can call us and the other trainees at low costs. Your mentor will also bring you to your working place on your first working day. Soon you will also get to know the other members of the Local Committee and the other trainees.

DO NOT FORGET!

  • Passport and if necessary a schengen-visa (Tip: Make some copys of them!)

  • Warm and rainproof clothes! Even in summer, the weather in Bochum can be quite cold sometimes. The summer months have the highest amount of rainfall!

  • Money for your expenses during the first month (about 500 €), e.g. security deposit, weekend trips and supplies
